Arizona Voters Overwhelmingly Support Passage of State Jobs Bill

April 07, 2010

New polling data shows strong support from all parties for job-creating legislation

PHOENIX - Over two-thirds of Arizona voters support passage of a comprehensive jobs bill according to a poll commissioned by the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Arizona Manufacturers Council.

The poll, conducted March 29 through April 1, has a margin of error of +/- 4.5%.  Five hundred voters were interviewed.

"This shouldn't come as a shock to anyone who's paying attention to the Arizona economy that people are looking for real solutions to the state's job deficit," Arizona Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Glenn Hamer said.  "Voters want the Legislature to act decisively and pass a jobs package to get Arizona's economy back on track."

Voters were presented with the following:

"The legislature is proposing a "Jobs Package" developed by leading economists that would phase in future corporate income tax reductions, decrease future business property taxes, provide tax incentives for businesses who locate in depressed or rural areas, makes tax reductions for manufacturers who produce high wage jobs, reduces individual income tax burdens for small businesses owners and would fund the state's job training program.  If you were advising your legislator today would tell your legislator that you strongly support, somewhat support, somewhat oppose, strongly oppose or have no opinion?"

Respondents overwhelmingly supported the proposal.

Strongly agree: 39%

Agree: 30%

Somewhat disagree: 6.6%

Strongly disagree: 10.8%

No opinion: 9.8%

Undecided: 3.8%

Refused: 0%

"With results like these, there's no misunderstanding what voters of all stripes want," Hamer said.  "The Legislature and the governor need to put more tools in Arizona's economic development toolbox and improve the state's competitiveness.  Unless legislators act to pass a comprehensive jobs bill, they can expect to be held accountable at the ballot box in November."
