Chamber Applauds Legislature for Passage of Anti-Card Check Ballot Measure

August 11, 2010

Voters poised to send strong message to White House that union elections should be conducted with secret ballots

PHOENIX – Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry President and CEO Glenn Hamer released the following statement regarding the Legislature’s bipartisan passage of legislation that will send to voters this November a ballot measure affirming the right to a secret ballot in a union organizing election:

“The Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry applauds the Legislature for doing the right thing today by passing SCR 1001, which will allow Arizona voters to affirm their fundamental right to a secret ballot in a union election.

“I have every expectation that voters will overwhelmingly approve Proposition 113 in November.  Arizona will send a message loud and clear to Washington to stop job-killing measures like Card Check that stifle any chance of economic recovery.”

The Chamber will be submitting the following argument for inclusion in the election publicity pamphlet:

Protect Your Right to a Secret Ballot

The right to vote a secret ballot is a fundamental freedom guaranteed all Americans.  Unfortunately, certain special interests are spending millions of dollars in an effort to strip Americans of this right.

Proposition 113 simply guarantees that all Arizonans will be able to vote a secret ballot in any union election. This measure represents the foundation of American democracy and is a direct reaction to attempts at the federal level to pass so-called ‘card-check’ legislation that would undermine that fundamental freedom.

A secret ballot ensures that Arizonans can safely and freely vote for the representative of their choosing without intimidation.  It is imperative that we protect this basic freedom and the voice of the individual citizen. With this constitutional amendment in place, voters will not fear retaliation for casting their vote one way or another, thereby encouraging more Arizonans to exercise this basic freedom.

It is for these reasons that we urge you to VOTE YES on Proposition 113.
